Common mass conversion mistakes

• The word 'ton' names three different weights: the metric tonne (1,000 kg), the US short ton (about 907 kg) and the UK long ton (about 1,016 kg). US sources almost always mean the short ton, older UK sources the long ton. Check which ton is meant before converting, they differ by up to 11%.
• The carat used for gemstones is a unit of mass: exactly 0.2 g, so a 5-carat diamond weighs 1 gram. The karat used for gold is something else entirely, a purity scale where 24k is pure gold and 18k is 75% gold. The two cannot be converted into each other.
