Common mistakes in mass conversion
-
The word 'ton' names three different weights: the metric tonne (1,000 kg), the US short ton (about 907 kg) and the UK long ton (about 1,016 kg). US sources almost always mean the short ton, older UK sources the long ton. Check which ton is meant before converting, they differ by up to 11%.
-
The 'just double it' shortcut from kilograms to pounds hides a 10% error: a kilogram is about 2.205 lb, so 80 kg is 176 lb, not 160. Multiply by 2.2 instead: double the number, then add 10%.
-
A stone is often assumed to be 10 pounds, but it is 14 pounds, about 6.35 kg. A body weight of '12 stone' is therefore about 76 kg, not 54 kg. Multiply stone by 6.35 to get kilograms.
