Common voltage conversion mistakes

  • The volt measures potential and the watt measures power. A 12 V battery says nothing about power until the current is known: 12 V at 2 A is 24 W, 12 V at 10 A is 120 W.
  • The µ prefix is often written u in datasheets and on components, because the character is missing from ordinary keyboards. uV and µV are the same unit, the microvolt, one millionth of a volt.
  • The millivolt and the megavolt are a factor of a billion apart and are written mV and MV. Upper and lower case carry the whole difference, exactly as between mW and MW in power.

28 millivolt equals 4.2e+4 microvolt.

Correct answer: 28 millivolt = 2.8e+4 microvolt.

229 nanovolt equals 0.229 microvolt.

Correct answer: 229 nanovolt = 0.229 microvolt.

Definitions

volt (V)

SI derived unit of electric potential. One watt per ampere.

The volt (V) is the SI unit of electric potential difference, defined as one watt per ampere. It is named after Alessandro Volta. Ohm's law ties it to current and resistance: volts equal amperes times ohms.

Frequently asked questions

How many millivolts are in a volt?

1000. Every prefix step in voltage is a factor of 1000: 1 kV = 1000 V, 1 V = 1000 mV and 1 mV = 1000 µV.

How do volts, amperes and watts relate?

In a DC circuit, watts = volts × amperes. The power then converts in the power converter, which also covers how an AC power factor changes the relationship.

What does Ohm's law say?

Voltage = current × resistance, that is U = R·I. 12 V across 4 Ω gives a current of 3 A. The resistance converts in the resistance converter.

How much is 230 V in kilovolts?

0.23 kV. Household voltage is almost never quoted in kilovolts, but a distribution network's 10 kV and 20 kV always are.

Why is the microvolt sometimes written uV?

Because the µ character is missing from many keyboards and older systems. uV always means microvolt, 10⁻⁶ V, and never anything else.

How do I use the voltage converter on konvertera.nu?

Enter your voltage value (like kV), choose the target unit (like V), and konvertera.nu converts it instantly.
