How to read 5’10”

The apostrophe means feet and the double quote inches: 5’10” is 5 feet and 10 inches. A foot is 12 inches and 30.48 cm, an inch is 2.54 cm. So 5’10” is 70 inches, 177.8 cm. When a height is written 5.10 in running text it usually means the same thing, 5 feet 10 inches, not 5.1 feet. The foot used here is the international foot. The old Swedish fot was 29.7 cm and is no longer used.

A pound is 0.4536 kg, so a quick estimate is to halve and take off a little: 150 lbs is 68 kg. Lbs is simply the abbreviation of pounds, from the Latin libra.

BMI with feet and pounds

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. With US units, convert first: 5’10” and 160 lbs is 1.78 m and 72.6 kg, and BMI is 72.6 divided by 1.78 times 1.78, so 23. To calculate directly in US units, the formula is weight in pounds times 703 divided by height in inches squared, which gives the same result. What a given BMI means is a question for a doctor, not for a conversion table.
