How much does a litre of berries weigh? Strawberries, blueberries and more

A litre of strawberries weighs about 500 g. A litre of blueberries weighs 600-700 g, lingonberries 600 g and raspberries 500 g. So a kilo of strawberries is about 2 litres. The weight depends on berry size and how tightly they sit, so allow a margin when a recipe gives berries in grams.

What does a litre of berries weigh?

The litre and dl columns are the Swedish preserving brand Törsleffs’ weights, which apply to berries before cleaning. The last column is the Swedish Food Agency’s volume weights for fresh berries. Dansukker also gives 500 g for a litre of strawberries. Blueberries differ most: Törsleffs gives 700 g per litre and the agency 60 g per dl, which is 600 g per litre. The agency’s figure comes from a 1975 US Department of Agriculture table, so it describes American blueberries, not Swedish wild bilberries.

How many litres is a kilo of berries?

A US cup is 2.37 dl, so a cup of strawberries weighs about 120 g and a cup of lingonberries about 140 g at these weights.

All values are Törsleffs’ and apply before cleaning. Dansukker gives 500-600 g for about a litre of aronia berries.

Berries for jam

Dansukker’s basic jam recipe is 2 litres of berries, about 1 kg, to 1 kg of jam sugar. A less sweet jam takes 4 litres of berries, about 2 kg, to 1 kg of jam sugar. Equal weights of berries and sugar keep for up to a year. With twice as much berry as sugar, the jam keeps for at least 6-9 months, according to Dansukker. Frozen berries

None of the sources has measured frozen berries. Frozen berries often sit more loosely in the measure and can weigh less per litre. Weigh them if the recipe gives grams.
