Common resistance conversion mistakes

  • The µ prefix is often written u in datasheets and on components, because the character is missing from ordinary keyboards. uΩ and µΩ are the same unit, the microohm.
  • The milliohm and the megaohm are written mΩ and MΩ and sit a factor of a billion apart. Upper and lower case carry the whole difference, and insulation testing in MΩ is easy to confuse with contact testing in mΩ.
  • Resistor markings such as 4k7 and 2M2 put the prefix where the decimal point would be. 4k7 is 4.7 kΩ, not 47 kΩ, and 2M2 is 2.2 MΩ.
