How much pasta and rice per person? Grams and cups

How much dry pasta and rice to cook per person, tables for 1-10 people, what it weighs cooked and how much water it needs.

Allow 75 g (2.6 oz) of dry pasta per person, and up to 100 g (3.5 oz) for big appetites. Rice: about 0.5 dl of uncooked rice per person, which is roughly 1/4 cup. Four people need 300 g of pasta or 2 dl of rice. Pasta weighs almost three times as much once cooked, and rice about three times as much.

How many grams of pasta per person?

Arla, the Swedish dairy, allows 75 g of dry pasta per portion in its recipes. The Swedish pasta maker Kungsörnen allows about 85 g. Arla notes that pasta makers’ portions range from 56 to 100 g and that restaurants often serve 110 g. A normal portion is between 75 and 125 g, depending on appetite and what else is served.

How much pasta is a portion by volume?

Pasta is rarely measured by volume, because the shape decides how much fits in the measure. Kungsörnen gives 10 dl of its quick-cook short pasta (fusilli, conchiglie and rigatoni) for four portions, which is 2.5 dl, about 1 cup, per person. Spaghetti and other long pasta cannot be measured by volume. Use scales or the packet’s portion guide.

How much rice per person?

Arla writes that 2 dl of uncooked rice makes 5 dl cooked and feeds 3-4 people. That is about 0.5 dl of uncooked rice per person. Ben’s Original allows 62.5 g of uncooked rice per portion, so a 1 kg pack gives 16 portions.

How much water for rice?

Ben’s Original gives 1 part rice to 2 parts water for its long grain rice, which absorbs all of it: 2 dl of rice takes 4 dl of water. Follow the packet for other kinds. If you boil rice in plenty of water and drain it like pasta, there is nothing to measure.

Cooked rice weight depends on the kind and on how much water it absorbs. The pasta factor is computed from the Swedish Food Agency’s food database: dry pasta is 10.6 percent water and cooked pasta 68.6 percent, so the dry matter in 100 g of dry pasta makes about 285 g cooked. Cooked spaghetti weighs about 50 g per dl and cooked long grain rice 70 g per dl, according to the agency’s portion guide.

How much water for pasta?

At least 1 litre of water per 100 g of pasta, says Arla. Kungsörnen suggests 1 litre per portion. Arla salts with 7 g of salt per litre, a heaped teaspoon. Plenty of water keeps the pasta from sticking.

Potatoes and bulgur

Arla allows about 200 g of potatoes per person. Bulgur weighs 2.8 times as much cooked as dry, according to the Swedish Food Agency’s measurements.
