Common mass conversion mistakes

  • The 'just double it' shortcut from kilograms to pounds hides a 10% error: a kilogram is about 2.205 lb, so 80 kg is 176 lb, not 160. Multiply by 2.2 instead: double the number, then add 10%.
  • A stone is often assumed to be 10 pounds, but it is 14 pounds, about 6.35 kg. A body weight of '12 stone' is therefore about 76 kg, not 54 kg. Multiply stone by 6.35 to get kilograms.
  • The carat used for gemstones is a unit of mass: exactly 0.2 g, so a 5-carat diamond weighs 1 gram. The karat used for gold is something else entirely, a purity scale where 24k is pure gold and 18k is 75% gold. The two cannot be converted into each other.
