Convert byte to kilobyte

Here you can quickly calculate how many kilobyte fit in one byte.
  • 1 B = 0.001 kB
  • 1 kB = 1000 B

Byte to kilobyte conversion table

byte kilobyte
1 0.001
2 0.002
5 0.005
10 0.01
20 0.02
50 0.05
100 0.1

Byte to kilobyte formula

To convert byte to kilobyte, divide by 1000.

1 B = 0.001 kB
Example: 1 byte = 0.001 kilobyte

Common data storage conversion mistakes

  • A byte is 8 bits, and the abbreviations differ only in letter case: lowercase b for bits (Mbit), uppercase B for bytes (MB). Broadband is sold in megabits per second while files are measured in megabytes. Mixing them up makes every figure wrong by a factor of eight.
  • In SI, 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, while 1,024 bytes is a kibibyte (KiB). Historically 'kB' has meant both, so different tools report different sizes for the same file. RAM is always counted in binary; storage media usually in decimal.
