Drive makers count in decimal: 1 TB = 1,000 GB = 10¹² bytes. Operating systems often display binary units (powers of 1,024), so the same drive shows up as about 931 'GB', really gibibytes (GiB). The 'missing' 69 gigabytes are just two counting systems, nothing is lost.

A byte is 8 bits, and the abbreviations differ only in letter case: lowercase b for bits (Mbit), uppercase B for bytes (MB). Broadband is sold in megabits per second while files are measured in megabytes. Mixing them up makes every figure wrong by a factor of eight.
