Convert kilobyte to byte

Here you can quickly calculate how many byte fit in one kilobyte.
  • 1 kB = 1000 B
  • 1 B = 0.001 kB

Kilobyte to byte conversion table

kilobyte byte
1 1000
2 2000
5 5000
10 10000
20 20000
50 50000
100 100000

Kilobyte to byte formula

To convert kilobyte to byte, multiply by 1000.

1 kB = 1000 B
Example: 1 kilobyte = 1000 byte

Common data storage conversion mistakes

  • A byte is 8 bits, and the abbreviations differ only in letter case: lowercase b for bits (Mbit), uppercase B for bytes (MB). Broadband is sold in megabits per second while files are measured in megabytes. Mixing them up makes every figure wrong by a factor of eight.
  • In SI, 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, while 1,024 bytes is a kibibyte (KiB). Historically 'kB' has meant both, so different tools report different sizes for the same file. RAM is always counted in binary; storage media usually in decimal.
