Common angle conversion mistakes

  • The calculator is in the wrong mode. SIN() in a spreadsheet, Math.sin in code and a calculator in radian mode all read 90 as radians, so sin(90) gives about 0.894, not 1. Convert degrees to radians first, or switch the calculator to degree mode.
  • A mil is not the same everywhere. The NATO mil is 1/6,400 of a turn, the old Swedish streck 1/6,300, and some armies use 1/6,000. Check which scale the sight or map uses, or the target lands off at long range.
  • Gradians and degrees are easy to mix up, since both show as plain numbers on the instrument. A right angle is 90° but 100 gon, and 1 gon is smaller than 1°. Check the unit setting on the instrument.

Quick conversion quiz

Score: 0

1 radian equals 3 440 arcminute.

Correct answer: 1 radian = 3 440 arcminute.

170 gradian equals 5 510 arcminute.

Correct answer: 170 gradian = 9 180 arcminute.

4.1 arcsecond equals 0.0101 mil (NATO).

Correct answer: 4.1 arcsecond = 0.0202 mil (NATO).

14.2 gradian equals 341 mil (NATO).

Correct answer: 14.2 gradian = 227 mil (NATO).

Definitions

turn (tr)

One full revolution, 360 degrees.

A turn is one full revolution around a point: 360 degrees, 400 gradians or 2π radians. It is the natural unit for rotation and the base of the mil and the gradian, which both divide it into a fixed number of equal parts.

degree (°)

One 360th of a full turn.

The degree (°) is one 360th of a full turn, so a right angle is 90°. It is divided into 60 arcminutes, and each arcminute into 60 arcseconds. To convert degrees to radians, multiply by π/180.

gradian (gon)

One 400th of a full turn, so a right angle is 100 gon.

The gradian, called gon in Swedish and German, divides a full turn into 400 parts. A right angle is exactly 100 gon, which makes right-angle arithmetic decimal. It is used in surveying and geodesy. One gon is 0.9 degrees.

radian (rad)

The SI unit of plane angle: the angle where the arc length equals the radius.

The radian (rad) is the coherent SI derived unit of plane angle. One radian is the angle at the centre of a circle where the arc is as long as the radius, about 57.2958 degrees. Half a turn is π rad, so π rad = 180°. To convert degrees to radians, multiply by π/180.

arcminute (′)

One 60th of a degree.

The arcminute (′) is one 60th of a degree, so a full turn is 21,600 arcminutes. It is the unit behind MOA (minute of angle) in rifle shooting: one MOA is one arcminute, about 2.91 cm at 100 m.

arcsecond (″)

One 60th of an arcminute, or 1/3,600 of a degree.

The arcsecond (″) is one 60th of an arcminute, which is 1/3,600 of a degree. It is the usual unit for very small angles in astronomy, such as the apparent size of planets and the positions of stars.

mil (NATO) (mil)

The NATO angular mil: one 6,400th of a full turn.

The angular mil used by NATO divides a full turn into 6,400 parts, so one mil is 0.05625 degrees. The old Swedish streck was 6,300 per turn, and other armies use 6,000, so check which system a figure refers to. It is not the thousandth of an inch, which is also called a mil.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert degrees to radians?

Multiply the degrees by π/180, about 0.017453. To go the other way, multiply the radians by 180/π, about 57.2958. So 90° is about 1.5708 rad, 180° is π, about 3.1416 rad, and 360° is 2π, about 6.2832 rad.

How many degrees is one radian?

1 radian is about 57.2958 degrees. A full turn is 2π radians, about 6.2832 rad, which equals 360°. A right angle of 90° is about 1.5708 rad.

What is a gradian and when is it used?

The gradian, also called gon, splits the turn into 400 parts, so a right angle is 100 gon and 1 gon is 0.9°. It is used mainly in surveying and geodesy, where right-angle measures come out as round numbers.

How many mils are in a turn?

It depends on the definition. NATO uses 6,400 mils per turn, so 1 mil is 0.05625°. The old Swedish streck split the turn into 6,300 parts, and other armies use 6,000 per turn. None of them is the thousandth of an inch, which is also called a mil.

How many arcminutes and arcseconds are in a degree?

One degree is 60 arcminutes and one arcminute is 60 arcseconds, so 1° is 3,600 arcseconds. Shooters use MOA (minute of angle), which is one arcminute, about 1.047 inches at 100 yards.

How do I use the angle converter on konvertera.nu?

Enter a value and pick a unit, say 90 degrees, and it is converted to radians, gradians, turns, arcminutes, arcseconds and mils at once.
