Mass

Pure thousand-steps from tonne down to microgram – three decimal jumps per conversion. Edit, print and share.

The mass table in chain form: 1 tonne = 1 000 kg, 1 kg = 1 000 g, 1 g = 1 000 mg – plus the shortcuts that make homework easier. Made for the classroom and home.

How the table works

Every row is a unit conversion: a quantity and unit on the left, the same quantity expressed in another unit on the right. The table is live – drag the handle to reorder, click a row to change the quantity or units, remove rows with the cross and add your own at the bottom.

Everything you change lands in the page address. Copy the link and others open exactly your table – handy when the whole class needs the same sheet. Your changes are also kept in your browser until you reset them, but only there: to share or keep them permanently, the link is what counts.

Print puts the table on a single portrait A4 and Download PDF gives you the same sheet as a file. Print practice sheet gives the table with empty answer cells and name/date lines – the normal printout is the answer key.

Pure thousand-steps

The mass chain is the simplest of the three: every conversion is exactly ×1 000, three decimal places at a time. Everyday life skips the in-between steps – nobody weighs anything in “decigrams”.

What about the hekto? One hectogram (hg) is 100 g and survives at the Swedish deli counter – “14.90 per hg” – but in the school chain you count tonnes, kilos, grams, milligrams and micrograms – you know the last one as the µg on vitamin jars.

Good to know: physics distinguishes mass (kg) from weight (newtons). Everything in this table is mass.

Roughly how heavy?

  • A paper clip weighs roughly 1 g.
  • A pack of butter is 500 g.
  • A litre of milk weighs roughly 1 kg.
  • A passenger car weighs just over 1 tonne.

US units in metric

The table includes pounds, ounces and the US ton with their exact metric values (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, about 454 g), and the editor offers all three. Mind the false friend: a US ton (2 000 lb) is lighter than the metric tonne (1 000 kg).

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are there in a kilo?

1 kg = 1 000 g. Kilo means thousand.

How many kilos are there in a tonne?

1 tonne = 1 000 kg = 1 000 000 g.

How do you write 250 g in kilograms?

250 g = 0.25 kg – divide by 1 000, the decimal point moves three places left.
