Definitions

tonne (t)

A metric unit of mass equal to 1000 kg.

The tonne (also known as the metric ton) is a non-SI unit of mass accepted for use with the SI. It is equal to 1000 kilograms. It is distinct from the 'long ton' (UK) and 'short ton' (US).

kilogram (kg)

The SI base unit of mass. Defined by Planck's constant.

The kilogram is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). Until 2019, it was defined by a physical artifact (Le Grand K). It is now defined by fixing the numerical value of the Planck constant.

gram (g)

1/1000 of a kilogram. Standard unit for small masses.

The gram is a metric unit of mass equal to one thousandth of a kilogram. It was originally defined as the mass of one cubic centimeter of pure water at 4 °C.

carat (ct)

Unit for gemstones, equal to 200 mg.

The metric carat is a unit of mass used for measuring gemstones and pearls. Since 1907, it has been internationally standardized as exactly 200 milligrams.

long ton (long ton)

British ton, 2240 pounds (approx 1016 kg).

The long ton (imperial ton) is a British unit of mass equal to 2,240 pounds (1,016 kg). It is heavier than both the metric tonne and the US short ton.

short ton (short ton)

US ton, 2000 pounds (approx 907 kg).

The short ton is a unit of mass common in the United States. It is equal to 2,000 pounds (approx. 907 kg).

pound (lb)

Imperial/US unit. Exactly 0.45359237 kg.

The pound (avoirdupois) is a unit of mass used in the imperial and US customary systems. Since 1959, the international pound has been defined as exactly 0.453 592 37 kilograms.

ounce (oz)

Imperial/US unit. 1/16 of a pound.

The ounce (avoirdupois) is a unit of mass equal to 1/16 of a pound, or approximately 28.35 grams. It should not be confused with the 'fluid ounce', which is a unit of volume.
